Turkish Ordinal Numbers: birinci, ikinci

Saying which one in a row: Kaçıncı kattasın? Beşinci kattayım.
The ending -ıncı turns a number into a rank: üç ("three") becomes üçüncü ("third"), and beş becomes beşinci ("fifth"). The question word turns the same way: kaç? ("how many?") becomes kaçıncı? ("which one in the row?"). Kaçıncı kattasın? Beşinci kattayım ("which floor are you on? I’m on the fifth").
The ending follows four-way harmony: -ıncı, -inci, -uncu, -üncü (kırkıncı, beşinci, dokuzuncu, üçüncü). After a vowel the ending loses its own first vowel and the number stays as it is: iki → ikinci, altı → altıncı, yedi → yedinci. The rank stands before its noun like any adjective, and the noun stays singular: ikinci ders, üçüncü sokak. In digits it takes a dot after the number: 3. kat.
One number changes shape: dört ends in t, and the ending starts with a vowel, so the t softens to d: dördüncü (see Ünsüz Yumuşaması ve Benzeşmesi). In a number of several words only the last word takes the ending: yirmi birinci ("twenty-first"), otuz dördüncü ("thirty-fourth").
