Turkish Imperative: Commands and Requests

To tell someone to do something, use the bare verb stem: Gel! (come), Bak! (look), Otur! (sit). No tense, no ending. This is the form for friends, family and children, like sen.

For someone you address as siz, or for several people, add -in: Gelin, Bakın, Oturun. Its vowel follows four-way harmony, and after a vowel a y bridges: Bekleyin, Okuyun. A very formal notice uses -iniz: Geliniz.

Don’t is the negation suffix on the stem: Gelme! Gelmeyin! To say let him or let them, use -sin and -sinler: Gelsin. Gelsinler.
