Turkish grammar · A1 · Lesson 11 of 29
Var and Yok in Turkish: There Is, There Is Not
Var / Yok
Saying something exists or doesn’t: param var, vaktim yok
var says that something is there; yok says it is not. They come at the end of the sentence and never change: Masada kitap var. Evde kimse yok.
Turkish has no verb to have. Instead you name the thing with a possessive ending and add var or yok: Param var means my money exists, that is, I have money. Vaktim yok: I have no time.
To ask, add the question particle: var mı? yok mu? Araban var mı? The answers are simply Var. or Yok.
Examples
Masada bir kitap var.
There is a book on the table.
Evde kimse yok.
There is nobody at home.
Bugün dersimiz yok.
We have no class today.
